The Filipino “heroes” who have been most effective at helping distressed overseas Filipino workers are the ones who chose to remain silent.

Sen. Panfilo Lacson noted this Thursday, in the wake of a brewing diplomatic row between the Philippines and Kuwait over the “rescue” of Filipinos supposedly being abused by their employers.

“Many unsung stories to rescue distressed OFW’s were pulled off by Filipino unsung heroes while posted abroad. Their brave feats are unchronicled. To remain effective in their mission, they choose to remain unsung. I happen to know some of them,” Lacson said in a tweet.

Lacson heads the Commission on Appointments’ foreign affairs committee that screens Philippine foreign service officers, including envoys to be posted abroad.

On Wednesday night, the Department of Foreign Affairs said it was informed that Kuwait had given Philippine envoy Renato Villa one week to return to Manila.

The DFA said this action of the Kuwaiti government is “deeply disturbing,” and will ask Ambassador Saleh to explain why the Kuwaiti government “reneged on the agreement reached with him to work together to move bilateral relations between the Philippines and Kuwait forward.”

Kuwait had reportedly also recalled its own ambassador from Manila over the row.

Earlier, Kuwait summoned Villa over reported efforts by the Philippine embassy there to rescue domestic workers abused by their employers.

Reports indicated at least two Filipinos were arrested last weekend for allegedly encouraging maids to flee their employers’ homes.

On the other hand, videos had been recently posted online showing “rescues” of allegedly distressed OFWs.

One video reportedly showed a Philippine Embassy team helping Filipino domestic helpers flee from their sponsors’ houses. The video indicated the vehicles used in the “rescues” had diplomatic license plates.

Earlier this year, the Philippines banned the deployment of new workers to Kuwait after the discovery of Joanna Demafelis’ body inside a freezer.
