Lacson Suspends Hearings on ‘Tokhang-for-Ransom’ amid Government’s Restructured Anti-Drug War

Citing the government’s focus on rogue police personnel in its restructured war against illegal drugs, Sen. Panfilo M. Lacson is suspending the Senate’s hearings on “tokhang for ransom” incidents involving scalawags in uniform.

Lacson, who chairs the Senate committee on public order and illegal drugs that held a hearing on the matter last week, said it would be wise that the Senate wait and see how the major changes in the anti-drug war will work out.

“In view of the massive restructuring of the war against drugs to focus on rogue cops as ordered by the President, it is my view that the Senate wait and see how this latest development plays out. Having said that, I am suspending the hearings on the ‘tokhang for ransom’ issue,” he said.

Time for the President to Become ‘Multi-Dimensional’ in 2017

I believe it’s time for the President to become multi-dimensional, not later, but starting New Year’s Day. Anyway, the anti-drug war is being addressed with more than enough vigor by our law enforcement agencies, particularly the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, the Philippine National Police, and the National Bureau of Investigation. He can still be the driving force behind the scene.

Corruption in government is one area where he can really make a difference, owing to his political will and resoluteness in getting things done. Once corruption is eradicated, many great things can happen to our country as a matter of course.

He could very well be the best president we’ve ever had if he learns to discard some old habits of a mayor and develop some good traits of a national leader. For a start, he can “Google” how to become a real statesman.

The bottom line for me is, I want him to succeed because like him and most Filipinos, I also love my country. There may not be a better gift that my and the president’s generation can bequeath to the next generation than a proud Filipino nation worthy of respect from all the other countries in the world. Singapore sans dictatorial rule should serve as a good role model for him to follow.

On the Narco List

An intelligence report must be treated as “Confidential,” even as a “Secret” or “Top Secret” document, depending on its security classification. A narco list, just like an Order of Battle, is a product of an intelligence workshop and is disseminated only to personnel with the corresponding security clearance. Hence, making it public would not only warn those in the list – thus jeopardizing any ongoing intelligence operations – but also unnecessarily shame them or put their lives at risk. Having said that, it may also be unfair to those who may not be correctly tagged as committing the wrongdoings as described in the intelligence document.

It goes without saying that the credibility of that list and all other narco lists involving other sectors for that matter have now become doubtful. An immediate review of all the narco lists is in order. As I said, the President or any official making a classified document public is ill-advised and will not serve the purpose for which it was prepared.
