ROSALES, Pangasinan – Former Senator and 2025 senatorial candidate Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson is pushing for a data-driven national strategy that will lessen our dependence on rice imports.
Lacson said such a data-driven approach will ensure that surplus rice from productive regions will reach areas with low supply, and minimize the impact of inefficiencies in agricultural logistics.
“What is important is that our moves must be data-driven. We need an efficient and effective monitoring and data-sharing mechanism,” he said in English at the “Konsultahang Bayan: Agenda para sa Agrikultura” forum at the New Bagsakan Center of the Rosales Farmer’s Market here Wednesday.

With such a monitoring mechanism, he said areas with a surplus can coordinate with areas with a shortage, and work on an acceptable trade.
Currently, Lacson lamented that imported rice continues to flood the market despite local “overproduction” in some regions. Such a situation tends to raise logistics costs, which in turn will result in higher rice prices.
Lacson proposed a comprehensive, data-driven monitoring and coordination system that would let the national and local governments to track supply and demand in real time.
“We can do that only if our data monitoring and data sharing are efficient and effective,” he said.
Also present at the “Konsultahang Bayan” forum were agriculture stakeholders, including the Federation of Free Farmers (FFF) led by chairman and former Agriculture Secretary Leonardo Montemayor; and Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (SINAG) led by its president Rosendo So.
FFF and SINAG expressed support for Lacson’s proposals.
