Lacson: Senate Redemption May Start with Minority Bloc’s ‘Win’

The Senate’s redemption of the Senate from its current situation may start with a “Win,” as the minority bloc closed ranks behind Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian for Senate President, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson said Saturday.

Lacson described Gatchalian as “eminently qualified” for the post as he cited not only his capability but his diligence and preparedness in Senate committee hearings and other proceedings.

“He is capable, qualified and prepares for his work. In all the committee hearings he attended or presided over, he knew what he was talking about and he was prepared. So we see him as eminently qualified to become the Senate President of the 20th Congress at least,” Lacson said in a mix of English and Filipino in an interview on DZMM radio.

“We know Gatchalian is qualified and can lead the Senate to have a united front against all issues facing it,” he said in a separate interview on DZRH. “He is acceptable not only to the minority but to some members of the majority.”

Lacson Debunks Imee’s ‘Con-Ass’ Lies

Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson on Friday dismissed as outright lies the claims of Sen. Maria Imelda Josefa Remedios “Imee” Marcos about a supposed attempt to take control of the Senate leadership to pave the way for constitutional amendments to extend the terms of top government officials – much less to extend the terms of the President and Vice President, and change their age requirements from 40 to 50 in order to disqualify Vice President Sara Duterte.

Lacson said the Senate minority bloc, where he is a member, has never heard of such a tale, much less taken it up during its caucuses.

“Flat lies, outright lies. Kasinungalingan. Walang paguusap kami maski mga caucuses namin. Napakalimit naming mag-caucus sa minority never yan napagusapan never yan nabanggit ang con-ass. Kung may planong mag-conass di namin alam yan. Kung meron man at kung meron kaming narinig di namin alam kung anong end state na gusto nilang makita (Those are flat, outright lies. We never took it up in our caucuses. We meet frequently but never talk about it. Whoever cooked up that tale, we don’t know what they are trying to get at),” he said in an interview on True FM.

Lacson: Senators Should Direct ‘Kumusta Kayo’ and ‘Aalagaan Ko Kayo’ to Filipinos, Back It With Action

Senators’ “kumusta kayo” and “aalagaan ko kayo” should reflect concern for ordinary Filipinos – not just among themselves – and must be backed by action, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson stressed on Friday.

Lacson said the new Senate minority bloc, where he is a member. is focusing on this by discussing ways to contribute to policy decision-making, while restoring the integrity of the Senate as an institution.

“The Filipinos should be the ones we show concern for. What is their plight? Can they still cope with their situation? When we say kumusta, we should not think of ourselves but ask what is the situation of our fellow Filipinos,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino in an interview on True FM.

“This is one reason why we in the minority want to contribute and make a difference in policy decision-making, and we can do this if we are in the majority. This is not a condescending claim that only we have the moral authority. This is what emerges from our minority caucuses,” he added.

Lacson: Prospective Senate Probe on May 13 Shooting Should Focus on Remedial Measures

Any prospective investigation by the Senate into the shooting incident inside its premises last May 13 should focus on remedial measures rather than criminal liability, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson said Friday.

Lacson said law enforcement agencies already probing the incident should handle the criminal investigation, adding it would be awkward for the Senate to investigate itself.

“I will suggest that we let the National Bureau of Investigation or Philippine National Police, or even the Department of Justice, do the investigation. Limit the Committee of the Whole Inquiry’s inquiry into coming up with remedial legislation or administrative remedies so there will be no repeat of what happened last May 13. We should not interfere in the aspect of who is at fault or who should face charges,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino in an interview on True FM.

Lacson: Move to Allow Online Participation in VP’s Impeachment Trial Won’t Succeed

A move to allow online participation not only for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio but to allow Sen. Ronald de la Rosa to participate and vote remotely in the plenary voting on motions – including the change of the Senate leadership and committee chairmanships – will likely fail, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson said Friday.

Lacson said the Senate’s rules allow virtual participation only during force majeure or unexpected and uncontrollable circumstances, or during emergencies such as the Covid pandemic.

“Hindi lulusot. At saka maantala kami pag binago namin ang rules on impeachment (Such a move won’t succeed. And it might delay us if we have to change the rules of the impeachment court),” he said in an interview on True FM.
