Lacson: Marcoleta, Defensor May Face Subornation of Perjury Complaint Over Guteza ‘Flip-Flop’

Detained Sen. Rodante Marcoleta and ex-Rep. Michael Defensor may face a complaint for subornation of perjury in connection with the “coached” testimony of ex-Marine Orly Guteza before the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee last year, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson said Saturday.

Lacson said the sequence of events during the Blue Ribbon hearing showed Marcoleta prompting Guteza on what to say in Guteza’s affidavit concerning his alleged delivery of cash in suitcases to certain personalities including former Speaker Martin Romualdez.

“Kung titingnan natin ang ebidensya, takbo ng pangyayari, nangyari ito noong pagdinig ng BRC na maliwanag kino-coach ni Sen Marcoleta. So isa siya sa pwedeng kasuhan ng subornation of perjury (If you look at the evidence and the sequence of events, it was clear that during the Blue Ribbon hearing, Marcoleta was ‘coaching’ Guteza. So Marcoleta could be one of those facing a complaint for subornation of perjury),” Lacson said in an interview on DWIZ radio.

Lacson: Impeachment Trial Schedule May Move to Afternoon Starting September

The impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio will likely be moved to the afternoon starting in September, Senator-Judge Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson said Saturday.

Lacson said the prevailing sentiment among members of the Senate majority bloc is to maximize the time for the impeachment trial by holding legislative sessions in the morning and moving the trial to the afternoon and potentially extending it into the evening.

“At least in the majority group, this is the dominating sentiment. We will hold legislative sessions in the morning so the impeachment trial would not be cut short. It is a more practical setup,” he said in English and Filipino in an interview on DWIZ radio.

Lacson: Fresh Start, Nothing Else, at Core of Senate Leadership Change Push

A fresh start for the Senate – and nothing else – is at the core of the push of the Senate’s 11-member minority bloc for a leadership change, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson stressed Sunday.

Lacson dismissed speculations that the minority’s move is linked to efforts to amend the Constitution or influence the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.

“Sa amin, ang primary or main concern naming 11, ibangon ang Senado. Wala kaming pinaguusapang kailangan palitan natin ng liderato para maitulak natin ng Con-ass, palitan natin ng liderato para ang impeachment mag-convict, wala kami ganun usapan (Our primary or main concern is to restore the Senate’s integrity. We never discussed anything else – not Con-ass, not the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte),” he said in an interview on DZBB radio.

“Yan lang ang mismong pinaguusapan namin na sana pagpalit tayo ng liderato, maibangon namin, magkaroon kami ng fresh start. Kaya napili namin si Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian. At least fresh face at wala siyang kaaway sabihin na natin (We in the minority bloc agreed that our reason for seeking a leadership change is to give the Senate a fresh start. That is why we rally behind Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian, he is a fresh face and has no ‘enemies’ among senators),” he added.

Lacson: Signing of BRC Partial Report Should be Guided by Sense of Duty, Not Pakikisama

The signing of the Senate Blue Ribbon Committee’s partial report on the flood control mess should be guided by a sense of duty and not “pakikisama” or peer pressure, Senate President Pro Tempore and Blue Ribbon Chairman Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson emphasized Saturday.

Lacson said senators must be swayed not by political affiliations or bloc lines but by their responsibilities as members of the Blue Ribbon committee when deciding whether to sign the partial report.

“For me, it doesn’t matter if you are in the majority or minority bloc, so long as you follow what is right. Otherwise, you will be blind if you claim that you won’t sign something from the majority because you are from the minority,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino in an interview on DWIZ radio.

“If you are a senator, you must have your own convictions, not follow the convictions of your colleagues,” he added.

Lacson: No Threat to Sotto-Led Senate Leadership Amid Possible Impeachment Trial

There is no threat to the Senate leadership under Senate President Vicente Sotto III amid the prospect of an impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte, Senate President Pro Tempore Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson said Saturday.

Lacson also said he and Sotto have started taking “crash courses” or briefings on legal matters – such as the Rules of Court and Revised Rules on Criminal Procedure – to prepare for the possible transmission of the impeachment case to the Senate.

“Impeachment trial or no impeachment trial, there’s always the possibility of an attempt at leadership change. That will not go away. Such plots are usually hatched during session breaks,” he said in a mix of English and Filipino in an interview on DWIZ radio.

“At least to my knowledge, the majority bloc is solid because Senate President Sotto is leading well,” he added.
