By upholding the Philippines’ position on sovereignty and international law at a high-level security forum in Seoul, Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. showed what the Philippines can bring to the world stage, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson said Sunday.
Lacson noted the praise Teodoro earned from netizens in South Korea for rebuking Chinese delegates over their questioning of the 2016 South China Sea Arbitration Award at the forum.

“Imagine a ‘President Gilbert Teodoro’ alongside global leaders: the world would inevitably ask why a nation led by such a brilliant mind remains poor and underdeveloped,” he said in a post on X.
At the recent Seoul Defense Dialogue last Sept. 8, Teodoro confronted Chinese delegates over their note questioning the 2016 South China Sea Arbitration Award which upheld the Philippines’ position.
During the forum, an event staffer handed Teodoro a note from a Chinese delegate claiming the arbitration award violates “fundamental principles of international law.”
Teodoro responded by reading the note aloud and emphasizing the primacy of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
He also stressed that China needs to show “basic decency and behavior” and told the Chinese delegates, “maging disente lang kayo nang konti, mahiya naman kayo nang konti (be a little decent and have some shame).”
South Korean netizens reportedly praised Teodoro for his “elegant anger in human language.”

Binanggit ni Lacson ang papuring natanggap ni Teodoro mula sa mga netizen sa South Korea matapos niyang pagsabihan ang mga delegadong Tsino dahil sa kanilang pagtatanong sa 2016 South China Sea Arbitration Award sa naturang forum.

Sa forum, iniabot kay Teodoro ng isang event staffer ang note mula sa isang delegadong Tsino na nagsasabing nilalabag umano ng arbitration award ang “fundamental principles of international law.”
Bilang tugon, binasa ni Teodoro nang malakas ang note at binigyang-diin ang primacy ng United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
