Proper handling and use of forensic tools are crucial to authenticating digital evidence in court, particularly amid growing concerns over artificial intelligence (AI)-generated and manipulated content, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson stressed Wednesday.
During his interpellation of National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) agent John Mark Calilung in the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte, Lacson said this should also apply to the recording of the Vice President’s online press conference that he authenticated.
“I’m not here to question the authenticity, I just want to be assured dahil sabi ko nga kanina pagka sa AI napakahirap talaga almost impossible to distinguish it from the original video or source (I’m not here to question the authenticity. I just want to be assured because with AI, it’s almost impossible to distinguish a tampered video from the original video or source),” Lacson said.

Calilung testified before the Senate acting as an Impeachment Court that the video recording of the Vice President’s press conference, during which she supposedly made threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., was not AI-generated.
Under questioning by Lacson, Calilung said he used an open source app to create a screen recording of the Facebook video. Calilung said he authenticated the recording by comparing it with the Facebook source and confirming the contents were identical.
While Lacson cited Calilung’s training and experience, having served with the NBI since 2021 and since then having appeared in multiple court hearings, he said his questions aimed to make sure the evidence can stand in court.
“Kaya ko tinanong yan, para additional na magamit sa korte, likewise sa impeachment court (I asked these clarificatory questions to ensure that the evidence can stand before the impeachment court),” Lacson said.

Nagpatotoo si Calilung sa harap ng Senado na nakaupo bilang Impeachment Court na ang video recording ng press conference ng Bise Presidente, kung saan umano ito nagbanta laban kay Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos Jr., ay hindi nilikha gamit ang AI.
Sa pagtatanong ni Lacson, sinabi ni Calilung na gumamit siya ng isang open-source application upang makagawa ng screen recording ng video mula sa Facebook. Aniya, pinatunayan niya ang pagiging authentic ng recording sa pamamagitan ng paghahambing nito sa orihinal na video sa Facebook at pagkumpirmang magkapareho ang nilalaman ng dalawa.
Bagama’t kinilala ni Lacson ang pagsasanay at karanasan ni Calilung, na nagsilbi sa NBI mula pa noong 2021 at mula noon ay ilang ulit nang humarap sa mga pagdinig sa korte, sinabi niyang layunin ng kanyang mga tanong na matiyak na tatayo ang ebidensya sa hukuman.
