Yesterday, the Upper Chamber was “invaded” by the former president of the republic.
Only one consistently and steadfastly stood up to preserve the dignity of the Philippine Senate. She happens to be a woman who answers, “present” during a roll call. Her name: Risa Hontiveros.
That said, I still stand by what I had expressed then. I also gave former President Duterte credit for the other good things he did while serving as President, as I had likewise called him out when he was wrong – like when he told the PNP that it was okay to receive money from illegal gambling.
Being consistently inconsistent as long as I fight for what is right is one trait I learned early from my parents whose integrity and courage to go against what is wrong no matter the cost I have never doubted and questioned.
* To those who may not understand, “invaded” is rhetorical. It means “overwhelmed”. As a senator for 18 years, I never encountered a more overwhelming resource person than the former president. I just thought allowing swear words to be repeated multiple times in a committee hearing does not speak well of the dignity of the Senate as an institution. FPRRD and Sen Hontiveros are merely incidental to the message I wanted to impart to my followers.

Always standing for what is right whatever the consequence. It’s the trait of a true patriotic, dedicated public servant like Sen. Ping Lacson!
