Ping Lacson Hopes New Pope Will be Instrumental in Ending World Conflicts; Prays for Peaceful PH Polls

Independent senatorial candidate Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson is hoping the new head of the Catholic Church, Pope Leo XIV, will be instrumental in ending conflicts around the world – even as he prayed for peaceful and honest elections in the Philippines.

At the press conference of the Alyansa para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial slate in Mandaluyong City Friday afternoon, Lacson said many of these conflicts, including the war in Ukraine, could have adverse effects on the Philippines.

“Before praying for the Philippines, we need prayers for world peace, and an end to conflicts around the world,” Lacson said in Filipino.

“Such conflicts may affect the Philippines so we must pray that Pope Leo XIV will be instrumental in resolving them,” he added.

Ping Lacson Cites Tradition of PH Leaders Standing Up to Foreign ‘Bullies’

The Philippines has a long and proud history of leaders standing up to foreign powers to defend our sovereignty and freedom – and former Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson is confident this tradition will continue amid current world events.

Lacson said Philippine leaders and heroes have stood up to invaders and colonizers in the same way Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy refused to be cowed by US President Donald Trump recently – for his people’s sake.

“I do hope and trust that our president – not just President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., but all other presidents – have stood up to foreign powers during the time of the Spaniards, Japanese and Americans. They all fought for our sovereignty and freedom,” he said in Filipino, in an interview on Bombo Radyo Philippines.

“We have experienced this and I trust that regardless of who the bully is, our leaders will stand up for us,” he added.

Lacson: PH Must be Ready for Possible Spillover of Russia-Ukraine Crisis

The Philippines must be fully prepared for a possible spillover to Asia of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson said Saturday.

Lacson said the Philippines has to walk the talk since it has supported the United Nations General Assembly resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

He said this includes allowing the use of our facilities by allies such as the United States.

“We might think that Ukraine is far away, and that there is no danger for the Philippines.  We are all living in a global village.  An invasion of Ukraine may adversely affect the stock markets all over the world. Prices of basic commodities and fuel may increase. We need to be prepared for this, not to mention that we are still suffering from the pandemic and are far from economic recovery,” ani Lacson.
