Lacson: Previous Senate ‘Fathers’ Were All Statesmen – Except One

The Senate’s previous “fathers” consistently demonstrated statesmanship and professionalism during leadership transitions — all except one, Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson noted over the weekend.

Lacson said disgraced ex-Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano stood out as the only Senate “leader” who triggered a legislative paralysis all because he tried to cling to power.

I’ve seen the ‘changing of the guard’ in the Senate many, many times.
Frank Drilon to Manny Villar in 2006; Manny Villar to Juan Ponce Enrile in 2008… Koko Pimentel to Tito Sotto in 2018… Chiz Escudero to Tito in September 2025; Tito to Alan Cayetano in May 2026; finally, to Sherwin Gatchalian on June 17, 2026.
Save for the last one, everyone else relinquished their posts with exemplary statesmanship and professionalism,” he said on X Sunday afternoon.

Lacson Pities Disgraced Ex-Senate President, Hopes His Rants Won’t Spiral into Complete Meltdown – or Worse

Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson voiced hopes on Saturday that the rants of disgraced ex-Senate President Alan Peter Cayetano – especially on his Facebook Live – would not spiral into a full-blown meltdown, or worse.

Lacson debunked Cayetano’s latest allegations as he noted that Cayetano’s increasingly baseless and erratic outbursts in recent days reflect a “quicksand mentality” and should no longer be taken seriously.

“Kawawa naman. Kung anu-ano na sinasabi. Parang malapit nang bumigay. Sana hindi matuluyang mag meltdown. Ipagdasal natin na huwag makaisip magpatiwakal (I pity him. He’s now saying all sorts of things. It seems he’s about to break down. I hope it doesn’t lead to a full meltdown. Let’s pray suicide doesn’t cross his mind),” he said in a post on X.

Ping Lacson: Best Way Forward on VP Impeachment Trial is Crossover to 20th Congress

For incoming Sen. Panfilo “Ping” M. Lacson, the best way forward on the issue of the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte is to let it cross over to the 20th Congress, with the Senate acting as an impeachment court.

Lacson rejected the claim of a draft resolution traced to the office of Sen. Ronald dela Rosa that the Senate can declare a de facto dismissal of the impeachment case against the Vice President, saying only the Senate as an impeachment court can render a decision on the matter.

“There is no sense in the draft resolution calling for the de facto dismissal of the impeachment case against Vice President Duterte. Only the Senate as an impeachment court can render a decision on the matter, not the Senate as a legislative body, as the latter has no jurisdiction or legal authority to do so,” he stressed.
